Local concern about sand mines grew in the weeks before Christmas. The city of Sparta and Monroe County each had meetings. The county zoning committee heard a proposal for a sand mining moratorium in the county, while the Sparta planning commission approved a conditional use permit for a sand mine in a recently annexed neighborhood in the city of Sparta.
